MAKING SPHERICAL COMPOSITE ENCLOSURES

Kris Metaverso, Engineer at US Enclosure Company

Hello and Welcome to the world of post-MDF enclosures.

We have been making spherical and other shapes from a wide variety of  composite and plastic materials for 15 years now. Using the techniques and resources in this booklet and DVD, you will  make spherical composite enclosures from 6 inches in diameter all the way up to 30 inches in diameter and more. No special tooling  or equipment other than what you have in your garage or can easily get from Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, or any home improvement or hardware store is required...

Topics Include:

WHAT'S WRONG WITH WOOD OR MDF?    WHY USE SPHERES OR ROUNDED SHAPES?             WHAT'S WRONG WITH BOXES?

GETTING STARTED:       TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT          SUPPLIES         OVERALL DESIGNS

THE 9 STEPS TO PRODUCE A FINISHED CURVED LOUDSPEAKER CABINET IN YOUR WORKSHOP

STEP BY STEP, THE DVD SHOWS A CURVED LOUDSPEAKER CABINET BUILT WITH ALL THE NEEDED MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

SPHERICAL COMPOSITE LOUDSPEAKER ENCLOSURES:

All US Enclosure spherical composite enclosures are manufactured with one custom-diameter hole for your driver (s). These enclosures are sandwich construction specifically engineered for high internal damping, long life, and durability. Outer finish can be glassy smooth with some performance drawbacks or slightly textured with no performance drawbacks. Stock finish is black, but there are 70+ pure and a dozen stone colors  available.
                                                                    THESE ARE NOT OEM COSTS!

We build spherical/curved loudspeaker enclosures at costs, amazingly enough, equal to truly high-quality standard-shaped loudspeaker enclosures available from legitimate retailers!!!

Spherical Enclosure Add-On's :

Mounting Rings: (order with enclosures): 3/4" thick mounting plates add strength to the enclosure and mount virtually all drivers, Outside Diameter (OD) cut to your specification, ID or interior cutout also custom. These circular plates are permanently fixed to the enclosure. You use the driver as a template to drill holes for inserts so that the driver can be professionally mounted and dismounted.

$20 each for 12-inch diameter, $25 each for 14 to 20-inch enclosures, $30 each for larger.

Levitated Cores:
$30 each for up to 12-inch diameter, $40 each for 14 to 20 inch diameter, $50 each for larger.

Levitated Composite Cores: (recommended for higher-power [100 watts or higher] woofers).
$40 each for up to 12-inch diameter, $50 each for 14 to 20-inch diameter, $60 each for larger.

EGG OR PARABOLIC-SHAPED

2/3 cubic foot egg ( 18.87 liters ), 12 inches wide by 14 inches long, 5.25 inch opening, glassy smooth finish, stiff plastic( excellent substrate ).

$60 each

1 cubic foot egg ( 30 liters ), 14.5 inches wide by 17 inches long, 5.25 inch opening, glassy smooth finish, stiff plastic ( excellent substrate ).

$95 each

Egg or Parabolic-Shaped Loudspeaker Enclosure Add-On's :

Composite EggsWe can furnish engineered composite reinforcement for the eggs at reasonable cost.
For 1/2 cu.ft. egg- $20. For 2/3 cu.ft. egg- $25. For 1 cu.ft. egg- $35.
Custom quotes available for larger sizes.

Framework Strength Additions:   Carbon Fiber bracing using our proprietary quasi- geodesic structural reinforcement, and Super-strength Kevlar (tm) fibers applied in a fractal pattern.

Wave Map Analysis:   We can apply our proprietary, patent-pending computer analysis to enclosure/driver combinations.. Cost is per driver-plus-enclosure combination, for enclosures of circular cross section only.  Estimated Wave-Maps for curved but non-spherical enclosures are available.

Volume and Thickness Adjustment:   We can adjust the interior volume of the enclosure and/or the wall thickness to your spec, plus or minus 1 cubic inch (+/- 16.4 cc's) of any volume loudspeaker enclosure.  Finer adjustments may also be available.

ORDERING INFORMATION:

Required Engineering Information:

ENCLOSURE WORKSHEET    Find Volume, Porting, & Power

First, is there an established design? If so, simply measure or determine the volume and check below if ported or sealed.

Vb, enclosure volume

Cubic feet _____ or  Liters _____

Ported/Vented or Sealed ? _____

If the required volume is unknown we can do a computer analysis, which requires:

1. Fs, driver’s resonant frequency in Hz _____

2. Re or voice coil DC resistance in Ohms ______

3. Vas acoustic volume in either Cubic Feet _____ or Liters _____

4. Prms RMS watts of the driver. Note: To obtain RMS power from peak power, multiply by .707

        RMS Watts _____

5. Qms mechanical Q factor _____

6. Qts total Q factor _____

7. Qes electrical Q factor _____

8. Deff Effective piston diameter: inches  _____ or cm _____   Note: Sd or effective piston area can be used instead in square inches _____ or sq. cm. _____

9. Xmax Peak excursion in inches _____  or mm _____

Tailoring the Composite:

The next step is to determine the general frequency band that the driver produces. This, along with 4.) RMS power, will let us determine the correct composition of material for the enclosure. (check all that apply)

Bass             Mid/Tweeter

Midbass       Fullrange

Midrange     Tweeter

Mounting Rings:

Are you going to make your own mounting rings?       Yes Please ship them to us for installation.

No, is the driver frame       circular or       non-circular?

Multiple-Driver Design:

Do you want us to provide:

mounting and/or enclosures for the additional drivers?       Yes       No

Is a textured exterior tower enclosure OK?       Yes       No

Do you want compartments for the electronics?       Yes       No

Want a stand?       Yes       No

Spherical enclosures:

Do you want a damping core?       Yes       No
